SOMALIAN CHICKEN & RICE SPECIAL

April 24 - May 5, 2019

Somali chicken suqaar with spices, bell peppers, onions, and garlic and spiced basmati rice. Somali cuisine varies regionally. Overall, it is an East African cuisine with influences from neighboring countries, Arab, Turkish, Indian, and Italian.

We encourage you to research a part of the world you may not be familiar with. Somalia is one of seven countries listed on Trump’s travel ban. The U.S. has also been involved in a secret war in Somalia for years. While Somalia wasn’t explicitly mentioned in Trump’s s***hole countries comment, the continent of Africa was. It is also no surprise that Somalia is rich in untapped natural resources such as natural gas, uranium, gold, tantalum, copper, and iron ore. The country is also believed to be have large reserves of oil because of its proximity to Saudi Arabia. The coastal country is also an important gateway port to East Africa.

The busy waters off the Somali coast are also at stake. Somalia has had economic ties with the Gulf Arab states for hundreds of years. More recently, those ties have turned into serious economic investments from Saudi Arabia, Qatar; and the transcontinental, but mostly Western Asian, country of Turkey. Turkey also opened a military base in Mogadishu to train Somali soldiers.

ARMENIAN GENOCIDE REMEMBRANCE DAY

April 24, 2019

We stand in solidarity with Armenians who seek official recognition of the genocide. The agony and harm of genocide does not end with one generation. There is transgenerational harm. Grieving loved ones and empty seats at the family dinner table during Easter where a grandmother or great-grandfather might have sat. It also hindered the country of Armenia’s economic development into modernity.

Human beings have a deep need to be seen and heard by others. We have a need for our own group’s suffering to be recognized by people from other groups. It adds a layer of validation and recognition. Human beings also have a deep need to be recognized for the beautiful and glorious aspects of our cultures. It is a testament to Armenian people that so many in the diaspora were successful in countries such as Lebanon, Syria, Iran, and the United States.

UYGHUR CHICKEN & RICE SPECIAL

April 13 - 27, 2019

Uyghurs are Turkic people who live primarily in Central Asia and Northwest China in Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region where they are not autonomous at all.

Uyghurs are primarily Muslim and as such their cooking reflects the Muslim food ways of the Silk Road with the use of spices, a preference for lamb, and breads.

Uyghur restaurant cooking in particular shows some Chinese influence. Big Plate Chicken is a dish invented by the Hui Muslim people in China. It was later adapted by Uyghurs.
